The Assistant Chaplain will aim to fulfil three broad roles within the school communities of Cranleigh Prep and Cranleigh Senior:
1. An ambassador for Christ
As a minister of the gospel, working alongside the Chaplain, he/she will take a leading role in the spiritual life of the school. A warm and growing personal faith in Christ, lived out with integrity and honesty, will be a vital part of this spiritual leadership. It will also include:
Leading the service, preaching or leading prayers at Chapel services in the Senior School and Prep School according to termly rotas
Having oversight of Christian Union meetings at the Prep and Senior Schools, speaking weekly or organising weekly speakers and writing Bible studies.
Assisting the Chaplain with chaplaincy work as the need arises.
Praying regularly for staff and pupils of the school.
Ensuring those of other faiths and none are supported spiritually in appropriate fashion.
2. A School ‘team player’
The Assistant Chaplain will play a full part in school life, including:
Teaching a specialist subject at the Senior School or Prep School dependent on the experience and qualifications of the person concerned.
In general the Assistant Chaplain will not have a tutor group or duty night, but there may be occasions when they will be required to step in. However, this is to enable the Assistant Chaplain to regularly visit the Boarding Houses at the Prep School and Senior School in the evening.
Coaching sports or taking a full part in other co-curricular activities, in a schedule suited to his/her talents, interests and other school commitments.
Supporting the life of the school community by attending concerts/plays etc.
3. A pastoral presence
The Assistant Chaplain will play an important role in providing pastoral support for both pupils and staff. He/she will have:
Strong personal skills, relating well to others.
Gifts and experience in teaching the Bible, especially to teenagers.
An ability to listen and build rapport with pupils and staff
To be welcoming and sensitive to others
The Assistant Chaplain will work closely with the Chaplain and will also deputise for the Chaplain in the case of his absence.
